Asseco Prokom Gdynia is currently one of the most important, the most titled and the strongest basketball teams in Poland.
For six years now, the Tri-City side has yet to find its equal in the Polish Basketball League. Each year, it has beaten all those who dared to try and claim the championship. Successes in Poland have been accompanied by regular participation in the elite Euroleague. Last season, coach Tomas Pacesas lead his team for the third promotion in the club’s history to the group of Europe’s 16 best teams. The club has also been accepted to Euroleague’s managing body.
Today, Asseco Prokom players enter a new season with the best chances of again becoming champions of Poland.
Aside from that, the team also has one other very important goal – proving that they are one of the best teams in Europe. The team that has dominated the Polish top division since 2003/04 was formed in 1995 – it was then called Trefl Sopot – and came storming through third division. Next year, it won the Polish second division. It took only two years for the new club to get promoted to Poland’s top basketball division. The first trophies were soon to follow. First, in the 1999/00 season, the players under coach Eugeniusz Kijewski won the Polish Cup. Three years later, they became Poland’s champions, and remain champions to this day.Another important event in the club’s history is the change of the official sponsor that took place last year. The club’s name followed and was changed to Asseco Prokom Sopot.
Changes in the club’s management did not impact the players, who again became Polish champions. Another important decision made by Asseco Prokom’s board was moving the team from Sopot to Gdynia. The basketballers now have the modern Gdynia exhibition and sports hall, where league and Euroleague matches will be played. The club’s supporters hope to celebrate here yet another championship title, and promotion from Europe’s top 16 to Europe’s top 8.
